TASTE OF THE TEXT Rumour has it in 1861, one of the Royal Mile’s 17th-century buildings collapsed, killing 35 people. A young boy, Joseph McIvor, was found alive among the rubble, his rescuers reportedly hearing him yell, “Heave awa’, lads, I’m no deid yet.” In honour of the child’s amazing escape, the new building was named ‘The Heave Awa’ Hoose’ (19). Even today if you look above the entrance to the building you will see Joseph’s head carved in stone as a reminder of the lad’s lucky escape.
