TASTE OF THE TEXT Not many people know that the tradition of firing the One O’Clock Gun from the castle ramparts (by the District Gunner from the 105th Regiment Royal Artillery, every day except Sunday) at precisely 1pm, first started in 1861. It was not to make tourists jump in fright, but to help sailing ships in the Firth of Forth accurately set their marine chronometers.
